With Honors (1994)

How 90’s is that poster?

Seriously, that is some quality flannel layering right there.

There’s a heavy handful of 20-something-oriented mainstream dramedies from mid nineties that I have a soft spot for – and I’m not talking about the slew of low-fi indie-cred Slacker Manifestos like Clerks, Glory Daze or The Size of Watermelons, those are permanently displayed on a dedicated mental shelf. But rather these handsome college-age relationshippy not-quite-rom-coms that seemed crop up on video store shelves every few weeks like Threesome (94) or Three of Hearts (93), Sleep with Me (94). You’d think love triangles, like Baldwins, were all the rage.

These tales of quirky-casual Gen-Xers desperately trying to come of age while waxing about relationships, lattes and stuff were a welcome streak in the decade’s plaid tapestry… like cinematic episodes of ‘Friends’. Eric Stolts and Parker Posey optional.

Anyway, ‘With Honors’ perfectly fits this bill, even though it leans into Joe Pesci vanity-project territory, it’s an engaging very-special-episode sitcom with a hot cast that gets top grades. If all else fails, “I’ll Remember” by Madonna will probably end up on your next breakup mixtape.
