It’s a shame I couldn’t land a copy of this back in the day (it never hit video store shelves in my neck of the woods), it’s one of the best movies about a new-wave power-pop girl group in space.
Ok, I admit – I watched a lot of Jem and the Holograms in the mid 80s, and lower-case B budget space shenanigans aside, this is what a live-action version of that show might have looked like at the time… if it was produced by Chuck’s band at Empire and directed by Albert Pyun.
I would totally have been down for that then. Actually, I’m still down for that now. This is absolutely my Jam.
And yeah – the Jem thing… at first it was just a way of passing the time between other daily syndicated afterschool Sunbow shows, but after a few episodes I grew to love its daily dive into the truly outrageous superficiality of the rock industry, not to mention its take on plurality and multiplicity.
I also had a huge crush on Stormer. -Pop
