The Relic (1997)

From the entomological splendour of Mimic, MIB and Starship Troopers to the oviparous invasiveness (and personal not-so-guilty pleasures) of Alien Resurrection or Anaconda, 1997 was a great year for creature features, and especially bug hunts.

And one of the many highlights was this Kothoga-powered outing by director Peter Hyams starring Penelope Ann Miller, Clayton Rohner, Linda Hunt and the late Tom Sizemore. This is of of my favourite monster-mashes of the decade, I saw it in an empty theater back in ’97 and it’s been stuck on me ever since.

It’s a fun night at the museum that still doesn’t get nearly enough love. This Relic belongs to that clutch of 90s “monster-in-a-bottle” flicks that felt like love letters to drive-in horror – it looks great on the shelf next to Lake Placid, Deep Rising and Tremors.
