The Raccoons were a big deal for a while. This show was perpetually on tv, you’d find it before school or after – in that soft nowhere-time when the house was half-awake and the TV was the only thing paying attention to you. But The Raccoons had a sweet earnestness, it was kind without being corny. It took on themes of corporate megalomania, friendship, redemption, and just doing the right thing when no one’s looking.
It’s one of those shows that doesn’t get brought up much. Not like the big ones, the ones with toys, and theme songs that still get karaoke’d. The Raccoons are tucked in the corners of our memory, like an old friend who never stopped believing the world could be better – even when we did. It’s a piece of our childhood that’s still in there, fighting the good fight.
