“This is K.A.B. Antonio Bay…” The Fog rolled into stores as a priced-to-own title in October of 1985 with this awesome Embassy Home Entertainment promotional deco.
The John Carpenter classic would set you back a cool forty bucks in 80’s money, but it was absolutely worth it. And to say something controversial – out of all of Carpenter’s early films (and I consider myself fairly sycophantic), I think The Fog is my favourite.
It manages to be both a zombie siege movie and a ghost story at the same time – two of my favourite horror genres just beautifully rolled together. This one really punches my buttons: the cast is a virtual who’s-who, the soundtrack is JC at his synthy spookiest, and there’s just something about an unstoppable supernatural force that’s slowly swarming towards you. Chef’s kiss.
In context, with the 80s looming, it makes sense that ol’ Carpenter would start exploring themes of recrudescence, the Fog is literally the sins of the past returning stab us in the back. -Pop
