A classic from the 90’s indie art-house shelf – Jeunet and Caro’s seminal steampunk opus starring Ron Perlman is a vivid phantasmagoria that I still haven’t shaken-off almost 30 years after that first rental. It’s a stunning work of art that I liken to Terry Gilliam by way of the Brothers Quay with Coen Bros Kinetics – but it comes together as a singular cohesive vision that sticks with you long after the credits roll.
This is gorgeous stuff.
Like The Cook, the Thief, His Wife & Her Lover or Barton Fink, “La cité des enfants perdus” was the kind of film that sparked endless late night coffee shop discussions over cigarettes and lattes.
