Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze (1991)

The day Ninja Rap was born. Yup yup.

This was the very apex of Turtlemania.

Admittedly, the original TMNT ’90 movie is my jam; I’d go as far as to say it’s one of the best Comic Book movies of the decade. But the producers knew they had a golden egg laying mutant goose on their hands and they fast-tracked the sequel with an aim to make it hipper and more accessible to a wider, especially younger, audience. And it worked… to a degree. In spite of the rabid fandom and heavy promotional blitz, the movie wasn’t a critical darling and didn’t reach the boffo box office of the original.

Clearly the law of diminishing returns was setting in and the Turtles were starting to get a bit démodé as their first wave of fans were growing older – this was also the point where I left these pizza-obsessed sewer dwellers behind.

For a while. -Pop

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles II: The Secret of the Ooze arrived on Home Video this week in 1991, after a March 22nd theatrical release.
