Anxiety, coffee and chocolate… This stylish neo-noir cat-and-mouser is pure caffeinated power Hauer.
For the uninitiated: Harley Stone (Hauer) is an absurdly unstable hard-boiled psychic detective who’s on the trail of a serial-killing satanic creature from hell. This movie is surprisingly character-driven and tremendously quotable with a neon-lit drippy atmosphere that’s wonderfully immersive for the budget. The action can be a tad sparse, but what this cinematic chocolate bar lacks in nougat, it makes up in nuts. It’s completely nuts.
Split Second was a product designed for shelf placement somewhere between Alien and Blade Runner (Alphabetical leanings notwithstanding), but it sits beautifully alongside The Hidden, I Come in Peace or Predator II. -Pop
Split Second landed on Home Video this week in 1992, after a short May Day theatrical release.
