Spawn is as 90s as superhero movies get. It’s a shiny melted mass of gritted teeth, black leather, rainy nights, gothic brooding, scenery chewing and guns. Lots of guns. And honestly, that was more than enough back when Black No.1 was my brand and everyday was Halloween – it didn’t necessarily have to be good, it just had to be filling. So I dug it.
The kickass soundtrack didn’t hurt.
Looking back, Todd McFarlane’s caped crucible tried to make the most of his then-respectable 40 million price tag but the special effects wrote checks the CGI couldn’t cash… and the movie still pays for it.
It underperformed and left much of its audience bagged and bored, but for we starving fans of capes and cowls, this went down like a Wendy’s value meal with a side of biggie chili.
