Yes, it’s a Rom Com. Set in Seattle. In 1992. The year Grunge exploded.
Most people my age at the time (20-something collegial slackers) doing our Gen-X thing almost laughed this off the screen for daring to attempt to reflect our styles and attitudes. Shyeah. How dare you, Cameron Crow. How dare you co-opt our shoe-gazing alterno-grungy sub-culture into a sincere love letter to Seattle and its awesome music scene. How dare you use your well-deserved credibility to shine a cursory light on us shiftless and unconforming bunch of anti-yuppy cynics – and fill it with bands we’d spent a year trying to make happen. How can you even hope to say anything about us? Mister Wunderkind. Take your boomer platitudes back to Ridgemont or whatever and we’ll just pretend this never happened for another 30 plus years. That is until we start getting sentimentally nostalgic for your 90s movies…
But secretly, I loved it. I got what he did.
I was down for this like I was down for Reality Bites and Glory Daze a couple years later. I was kinda-sorta ok with Hollywood trying to legitimize (read, cash-in) our attitudes and fashions. It was almost nice not being ignored for once.
But I’ll be damned if I’d admitted it at the time. -Pop
