This odd little number gets its title from a 1959 novelty song that appears on way too many Halloween mixtapes for my liking. Because I have very strict and very subjective rules when it comes to Halloween songs. It’s a thing. Anyway.
Writer-director Dale Launer (who also wrote Blind Date and My Cousin Vinny) whipped up a cute little shelf-warmer that never seemed to find true love. But it definitely has its nerdy charms. As far as high-concept 90s rom-coms go, it’s a quirky cocktail that mostly avoids the Funky Cold Medina hijinks you might expect from the premise. It’s actually quite sweet, a little awkward at times, and maybe it just wants you to like it for what it is.
It rightly belongs on the mad science of love shelf with Multiplicity, Making Mr. Right, Dr Jekyll and Mrs Hyde and The Nutty Professor.
If you rented the original VHS release in 1992, it starred Tate Donovan. If you rented any edition after 1994, co-star Sandra Bullock got top billing… and took over the box art completely with some editions. -Pop
