Little Giants (1994)

That quintessentially 90s underdog sports flick where the misfits take on the mighty, and we all learn a little something about teamwork. Rick Moranis and Ed O’Neill star as brothers Danny and Kevin O’Shea, squaring off in a peewee football showdown that pits the athletically challenged against the annoyingly gifted.

For the uninitiated, Danny’s daughter gets snubbed from her alpha uncle’s elite team for being a girl. So, to level the playing field, Danny rounds up the neighborhood’s leftover kids to form a ragtag team of their own, leading to a climactic high-stakes playoff game. Not unlike any other kids’ sports film. This is Steven Spielberg getting some skin in the game, so it plays with a bit more heart than the typical Bad News Bears clone that permeated the decade. It was actually inspired by a 1992 McDonald’s Super Bowl commercial that caught his eye.

Despite its formulaic playbook, Little Giants carved out its own niche as a nostalgic favorite. It’s a movie that reminds us that sometimes, it’s not about winning or losing, it’s how many Cheetos you can stuff in your mouth while watching from the couch.

So, if you’re in the mood for some family-friendly gridiron goodness, you might want to throw around this bit of cinematic pigskin. Just don’t expect any surprises – you already know the score. -Pop
