This. This is the movie I use to test people.
It’s my way to measure exactly how much chaos, grime, and manic visuals a person can tolerate before they snap, look you dead in the eye, and say, No. Absolutely not.
I unabashedly love this all singing, all dancing maniacal roach movie starring Megan Ward and Jerry O’Connell (in a slacker tour-de-force). From the on-point mid-90’s musical-scene ennui to the perfectly staged bathroom humeur, Joe’s Apartment lets you slum it without actually stepping foot in the muck.
It’s a grimy little oddball that festered on the video store shelves long after dying a quick death at the box office – why MTV thought this would be the ideal movie to launch their film division is a head-scratcher, but the original short on which it’s based was its own kind of awesome.
Anyway, this is a movie that patiently waits in the dark for the right kind of degenerate to come along. You know, the kind that thinks Gremlins 2 is a tad too civilised.
It’s anarchic, it’s shrill, it’s filthy, it’s fun, it just oozes Gen-X attitude and it doesn’t care if you get it. It’s something to just check in when you want to check out.
Many don’t make it past the first 10 minutes. But when they do? I know I’ve found my people. -Pop
