We were nearing the end of phase-one Coreymania… The troubled teen power-duo got in on the 80’s bodyswap bandwagon, a worthy genre known to have boost’d a career or two – but it was met with about as much enthusiasm as 18 Again or Like Father Like Son. Which is to say audiences went to see Lean on Me that opening weekend. Heck, we still had The ‘Burbs (Which also featured a Corey) and Bill & Ted still in the top 10, there were a quite a few date-night options. We may have been distracted.
Even Corey Feldman’s choice dance moves were overshadowed by the soundtrack’s runaway top 10 hit ‘Rock On’ by Michael Damien – which is still on heavy rotation on every playlist I make.
Michael Damian’s remake actually reached #1 in June of 1989. Soldier Of Love by Donny Osmond was number 2 that week. Damn good times. Where was I?
Also, I’m pretty sure Michael Damian, Andras Jones and David Boreanaz were all part of some secret ongoing cloning experiment.
Anyways. I always had a fondness for this one, and viewed through magic nostalgic sunglasses, it’s a fun teen fantasy rom com with some solid jabs at indie surrealism. Always worth the price of the rental. -Pop
