Breakin’ (1984)

Breakin’ broke onto home video in October of ‘84, after a May 4th theatrical boogaloo.

I can’t believe it’s been over 40 years.

With the exception of Saturday Night Fever, few fad cash-ins have been so perfectly timed as Cannon’s mid 80’s Rap n’ Breakdanceploitation flicks. They dropped right when every school kid in North America was obsessively poppin’ and lockin on flattened-out cardboard (thanks, Alfonso Ribeiro) – and they only helped to fuel the trend. I was there, it happened. I participated. I even owned the K-Tel ‘Breakdance’ instructional record and yes… I was a pre-teen suburban wanna-B-boy. Anyway.

For the uninitiated – If you haven’t already gotten funky fresh with Ozone, Turbo and Special K, fans of old skool rap and lovers of awkward pop-culture cash-grabs should definitely check out this penthouse view of the streetz. It’s an awesome time capsule.

It deserves the top spot on the shelf next to Rappin’, Krush Groove, Wild Style, Beat Street and Body Rock.

The older I get, my poppin’ and lockin’ gets more acute. -Pop
