The Soundtrack of 1985 for an R-Rated Record Breaker
People forget just how huge this was.
Adjusted for inflation, it’s still one of the highest-grossing R-Rated films in history – with a total US box office gross of 730,714,743 in 2024. The original home video release also broke some records too, with 1.3 million units shipped at an affordable priced-to-own 29.95. A rarity back then.
The flick was on everyone’s lips for a solid year, and admittedly, that awesome soundtrack was fused to the inside of my Walkman for most of 1985 – even though it would be a couple of years before I could see the actual movie,
I knew it pretty well, what with the copious clips from the music videos, and schoolyard rumors of course.
The album was released in January of 1985 and by June it hit the number 1 spot on the Billboard album chart.
It’s still one of my favourite workout mixtapes to this day. -Pop
Beverly Hills Cop went to Home Video today in 1985, after a December 5th, 1984 theatrical shakedown.
