A Pyromaniac’s Love Story nudged its way into that mid-90s moment when studios were throwing money at anything that looked vaguely indie but still had top shelf appeal. This was peak Sundance fever – it seemed that every exec wanted their own chatty romantic comedy with shiftless Gen X characters.
The film sits awkwardly between the genuine articles like Kicking and Screaming and Walking and Talking, and the try-harder knockoffs like The Pompatus of Love and Don’t Do It. Not edgy or “real” enough for the Slacker crowd, not mainstream enough for the Four Weddings audience – A Pyromaniac’s Love Story quietly skulked on the rental shelf as a meta moral farce with fairy-tale framing, but it didn’t generate enough heat to ignite.
Sadly, it flickered and mostly disappeared from public consciousness but it’s an interesting relic of the time. Not a misfire, exactly, just a reminder that whimsy for its own sake just tends to blow smoke.
Pyromaniac still manages to light my fire, though. If you have a love of heartfelt 90’s dramedy like Untamed Heart or Benny & Joon, this one’s a good match. -Pop
