By the late 90s the SNL sketch-to-movie pipeline was running on fumes, churning out catchphrases that had gotten old before the posters went up. On paper, Roxbury made as much sense as any of them: two hyper-specific weirdos, an instantly recognisable bit, a killer dance track, Will Ferrell clearly on his way up. This looked like it could be the next Wayne’s World.
But Wayne and Garth had self-awareness, and just enough story to ride the irony out. Nobody quite wrote down what drives Steve and Doug other than music, girls, and each other’s approval. Still, its heart is very much in the right place
These two weren’t trying to be cool or change anything. They just wanted in.
They wanted to be seen and be popular. And that’s ok. So did this movie.
