Batman Forever landed on Home Video today in 1995, after a June 16th theatrical drive thru.
After the exquisitely bleak ‘92 yuletidey sequel, it was decided that Tim Burton would hand over the bat-reins to seasoned filmmaker Joel Schumacher to lighten things up and bring some of that Happy Meal money back. He moved the action to the sexier neon-lit parts of Gotham – where evidently black lights and face paint are all the rage among gangbangers. And it was awesome. Whereas Batman & Robin later embraced the campier side of the cape, this one feels like it amplified the absurdist elements of the franchise just enough to create the ultimate expression of 90’s pop art – filled with black leather, quippy repartee, mass-media satire, angsty self-awareness and a scorching alterno soundtrack. This Batman likes to party.
